Girl Gets Bionic Fingers

A 15 year old schoolgirl from Swindon, UK has become the youngest person in Europe to be fitted with bionic fingers.

Chloe Holmes lost her her fingers as a toddler when she suffered from septicaemia after contracting chickenpox.

She wore a prosthetic hand until her family paid £38,000 for the hi-tech hand from Touch Bionics in Scotland. Although it will never provide Chloe with the same range of motion and dexterity as a human hand, it does enable her to pick up items, or small blocks as seen in the below video. But she seems happy and satisfied with what she got, Chloe even says that “she didn’t expect it to work as well as it does and that she’d get as much good use out of it.”

Her father Pete Holmes said: “We’d go out as a family and people would stare for the wrong reasons – they stare now in amazement.”

The bionic hand isn’t hard wired into Chloe. Instead a set of sensors detect movement in her arm, enabling her to control the futuristic device.
