Volkswagen Brazil Ends Production of Kombi Van

Volkswagen Kombi Van Ending Production in Brazil

After 56-Year, the iconic Volkswagen Kombi, better known to some as the classic VW Type 2 camper van is going out of production in Brazil. VW is sending the Bus out in style, with the limited-edition Volkswagen Kombi Last Edition, limited to just 600 units, which is designed to celebrate the legendary vehicle’s history.

This Last Edition comes nostalgia-filled with a two-tone blue and white paint job, whitewall tires, and matching white wheel caps. The exterior include a blue upper grille and headlight trim, as well as “’56 anos – Kombi Last Edition” decals on the side and rear of the Bus. Other unique up-to-date features such as an MP3 sound system with auxiliary and USB ports. The engine comes with a water-cooled 77-hp 1.4-liter I-4 in its rear engine and a four-speed manual transmission.

The first versions of the Type 2 were assembled in Brazil on September 2, 1957, featuring the same air-cooled flat-four engine as the VW Beetle. That engine was replaced by a water-cooled unit in 1982 and the model soldiered on but finally it has succumbed to environmental legislation and production will end later this year after more than 1.5 million units. Production of the T2 in Hanover, Germany ended in 1979 after 2,142.918 vehicles had been produced.
