The World First Digital Binoculars

Sony has launched the world first digital binoculars that record Full HD video. The new binoculars DEV-3 and DEV-5 (priced at $1400 and $2000) includes two Exmor R CMOS sensors for native 3D video capture, dual f/1.8-3.4, 0.5-10x optical zoom lenses, and a pair of 1,227-dot viewfinders. While the pricier model adds a 10x digital zoom, GPS, and accessories like a carrying case and neck strap, those features don’t really justify the price difference between the two. So if you can live without GPS option, then you probably better off without the DEV-5.

The DEV-5 and DEV-3 use electronic autofocus to keep even moving objects sharp at all time. A dial at the top of the camera allows for adjustment of manual focus. Electronic autofocus can be used as close as 1cm away when recording in 2D, or 80cm away when recording in 3D. Both set use optical Steadyshot, the same optical stabilisation system that’s found on Handycam camcorders and Cyber-shot cameras.

The all new digital recordable binoculars from Sony will be available in November 2011 at Sony retail stores and other authorized retailers nationwide.
