The World’s Largest Solar Powered Boat

The world’s largest solar powered boat arrived in the central town of Nha Trang, Vietnam last Monday on its world tour, with four crew members from France, Switzerland and Germany.

The Swiss designed, German built “Turanor Planet Solar” is powered by over 5,380 square feet of solar paneling. The panels power two electric motors, which can reach 15 miles per hour, and it can also store energy to power the boat in cloudy weather for three days. The excess energy is stored in a giant lithium-ion battery.

According to the Captain Le Rouzic, the boat will stay in Vietnam six days as part of its world journey, which started last September in Monaco.

The journey was aimed to raise public awareness of the importance of renewable energies and environmental protection.
