The Free Republic of Liberland is a 7 square kilometers newborn country located in southeastern Europe that was officially founded on April 13th, 2015. It’s situated on the border between Croatia and Serbia.
The founder and president of Liberland is Vít Jedlička, a 31-year-old Czech politician who is also regional party leader of one of the Czech Republic’s northern districts.
According to Jedlička, the nation exists in land that is unclaimed by either Croatia or Serbia due to an ongoing border dispute. The objective of Liberland’s founders is “to build a country where honest people can prosper without being oppressed by governments making their lives unpleasant through the burden of unnecessary restrictions and taxes.”
The founders are inspired by countries like Monaco and Liechtenstein. Jedlička accepts requests for citizenship, and according to the official website, only communists, neonazis, and other extremists are ineligible for citizenship.
